Texas Massage CE Requirements: 12 Hours

Texas massage therapy CE requirements are more straightforward than many therapists expect: you need at least 12 hours of acceptable continuing education to renew. The important part is not just the number. Texas also cares about course subject matter, provider status, and whether a technique course is delivered online or in person. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation

I teach massage continuing education, so I see where people get tripped up. They find a low-cost course, finish it, and only later ask whether Texas accepts it. Flip that order: check your renewal needs first, then buy the right education.

The Texas LMT CE requirement at a glance

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) says massage therapists must complete at least 12 hours of TDLR-approved or recognized continuing education to renew a license. TDLR accepts qualifying programs from its approved providers and recognized providers; it specifically identifies NCBTMB as a recognized provider, while still requiring that course content fit the acceptable curriculum. TDLR's massage CE requirements

Total CE -- What TDLR says: At least 12 hours per renewal term

Course content -- What TDLR says: Must relate directly to massage theory or clinical application of theory

Online coursework -- What TDLR says: Allowed when the subject is not massage techniques or soft-tissue manipulation

Technique/manipulation coursework -- What TDLR says: Do not rely on online or correspondence delivery

First aid/CPR -- What TDLR says: May count, but no more than six hours total per renewal period

Provider -- What TDLR says: TDLR-approved or recognized provider; NCBTMB is recognized

Documentation -- What TDLR says: Keep records; submit only if selected for an audit

All of those points come directly from TDLR's current CE page. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation

What counts as acceptable massage CE in Texas?

TDLR lists subjects including massage practice, soft-tissue manipulation, laws and rules, business practices, professional ethics, anatomy, physiology, hydrotherapy, kinesiology, pathology, and health and hygiene. The course must be designed to build professional knowledge, skill, or competence. TDLR's acceptable subject list

That leaves room to build a useful renewal plan. You can take ethics because it makes you sharper with boundaries. You can refresh spa practices because presentation and professionalism affect every client interaction. You can study a modality because you want a new perspective on your service menu.

But "interesting" is not the same as "acceptable." TDLR says courses should connect to massage theory or its clinical application. Before buying, read the course description and keep the completion certificate.

The online rule Texas therapists should not ignore

Here is the sentence to remember: Texas accepts online or correspondence CE that otherwise meets its standards only when the subject is not massage therapy techniques or manipulation of soft tissue. TDLR's online-course guidance

In practical terms, online theory, ethics, business, and professional-development courses can be a sensible fit. An online technique course may be valuable educationally, but do not count on it toward Texas renewal without a current TDLR confirmation.

A smart way to split your courses

List the 12 hours you need. Separate hands-on technique education from theory and professional topics. Put in-person technique training on the calendar first. Use qualifying online courses to fill the theory, ethics, business, or other eligible portion. Then keep proof of completion in one renewal folder.

This is especially helpful if you travel, work a packed client schedule, or tend to complete CE late in the cycle.

Do not forget human-trafficking prevention training

Texas's massage license renewal application states that licensees must complete human-trafficking prevention training at each renewal on or after September 1, 2020. The application lists it separately from the minimum 12 approved CE hours, so treat it as its own renewal item unless TDLR tells you otherwise. TDLR renewal application

That distinction matters. A therapist can complete 12 strong CE hours and still have an unfinished renewal task if the required training is missing.

Are VIP Maui Massage courses a fit for Texas?

VIP Maui Massage is an NCBTMB Approved Provider (#1003357). Because TDLR recognizes NCBTMB providers and courses, our online classes may be useful for Texas therapists when the content meets TDLR's requirements. Still, the state makes the final call on acceptable content and format. TDLR provider-recognition guidance

Our online course lineup includes:

  • Massage Ethics -- 2 CE hours, $50

  • Cupping Therapy -- 5 CE hours, $125

  • PEMF Therapy -- 2 CE hours, $50

  • Spa 101 Refresher -- 4 CE hours, $100

  • Hot Stone Massage -- 5 CE hours, $125

You can review each course at VIP Maui Massage Continuing Education. For a therapist looking for eligible theory or professional-development hours, the all-course bundle provides 18 CE hours for $100 at the bundle checkout.

One important note: because Texas limits online delivery for massage techniques and soft-tissue manipulation, do not buy the bundle assuming it replaces any in-person technique requirement. Match the course topic and delivery method to your personal TDLR renewal plan.

Keep your records even after you renew

TDLR says it audits CE after renewal, can select licensees at any time during the license period, and asks selected therapists to upload documentation through their online account. It also says you should not send documentation with the renewal unless you are selected. TDLR audit guidance

My recommendation is simple: save each certificate with a filename that includes the course, hours, date, and provider. Add the receipt and course outline when available. If TDLR contacts you later, you will not have to dig through old emails.

Make CE support your work

The best CE plan does two jobs: it helps you renew, and it gives you something you can use with clients. Start with Texas's 12-hour requirement and human-trafficking training. Schedule any in-person technique learning. Then choose online courses that strengthen the business and skills you actually want to build.

Browse VIP's massage CE courses when you are ready to fill eligible hours. If the five-course mix matches your plan, get 18 CE hours for $100 through the VIP CE bundle.
